GOLF SIMULATORS
How much space do I need for a golf simulator?
At minimum you need 9 ft of ceiling height at the hitting position, 10 ft of width, and 15 ft of depth. These are bare minimums — more room gives you more flexibility on monitor choice and projector setup. Ceiling height is the most critical measurement and must be taken at the spot where you’ll actually be swinging, not the middle of the room. Our full Build Guide at portersgolf.com/how-to-build-a-home-golf-simulator-2026-guide/ has detailed space requirements for every monitor type.
What do I need to build a home golf simulator?
A complete home simulator setup has six main components: a launch monitor, an impact screen, an enclosure or frame, a projector, a hitting mat, and a computer running simulator software. Some packages include all of these — others require a PC and software to be added separately. Every Package Page on PortersGolf clearly lists what’s included and what you’ll need to add.
How much does a home golf simulator cost?
Entry-level setups — a radar monitor and hitting net without projection — start around $1,500 to $5,000. A mid-range setup with a full enclosure, quality impact screen, projector, and mid-grade launch monitor runs $5,000 to $19,000. High-end dedicated room builds with overhead camera monitors, laser projectors, and premium enclosures run $19,000 to $30,000 or more. Not sure what’s realistic for your space and budget? Use our free Custom Recommendation Form and we’ll give you a straight answer.
Can I build a golf simulator in my garage?
Yes — a two-car garage is one of the most popular spaces. The main thing to confirm is ceiling height at the hitting position. Garages with angled or sloped ceilings can catch people off guard — measure at the spot where you’ll be swinging before buying anything.
Should I buy a complete package or build my own?
A complete package ensures all components are matched and compatible — the monitor, enclosure, screen, projector, and mat all work together without research on your part. Building your own gives you more flexibility to choose specific components but requires more research to confirm compatibility. If you’re not sure, our Custom Recommendation Form is the fastest way to get a matched setup recommendation for your specific space.
Do I need a projector or can I use a TV?
You can use a large TV instead of projecting onto an impact screen. It’s less immersive and limits your hitting surface options, but works well for data-focused practice at a lower cost. If the full course-play experience matters to you, a projector and impact screen is the way to go.
What is the most important component to spend money on?
The launch monitor. Everything else — enclosure, projector, mat — can be upgraded over time. An inaccurate monitor gives you bad data, which defeats the purpose of practicing indoors. Buy the best monitor your budget allows and build the rest of the setup around it.
LAUNCH MONITORS
What’s the difference between radar and camera-based launch monitors?
Radar monitors (like the FlightScope Mevo+ and Garmin R10) sit on the floor behind you and track the ball after impact using radio waves. They need the ball to travel at least 8 ft indoors before the radar can calculate spin reliably — so room depth matters. Camera-based monitors use high-speed cameras to capture the ball at or near impact. They’re more accurate in tight indoor spaces and don’t need as much depth. Overhead camera systems like Uneekor mount to the ceiling or enclosure frame and require a specific ceiling height — typically 9 to 10 ft.
Do I need to mark my golf balls?
It depends on the monitor. Uneekor overhead monitors don’t require ball marking — any ball works. The NVISAGE N1 requires NVISAGE marked balls for accurate spin data. Radar monitors like the FlightScope Mevo+ recommend metallic dot stickers indoors for better spin accuracy. Each product page on PortersGolf specifies the ball marking requirement for that monitor.
Can I use any clubs?
Yes. Launch monitors track your shots regardless of what clubs you swing. Some monitors store individual club profiles for detailed per-club analysis, but any clubs work from setup.
IMPACT SCREENS
What size impact screen do I need?
Match your screen size to your enclosure opening — not your room dimensions. The screen should be wider than the hitting opening on both sides to give margin for off-center shots. If you have a Carl’s Place enclosure, the matching screen size is listed in your enclosure specs. Not sure? Contact us before ordering and we’ll confirm.
What’s the difference between Standard, Preferred, Premium, and High-Contrast Gray screens?
All four are Carl’s Place screens that scale up in image quality, noise reduction, and durability. Standard is an entry-level single-layer mesh — it works but produces more noise and a grainier image. Preferred is heavy-duty woven polyester with a noticeably smoother HD image — the most popular choice for home setups. Premium is a three-layer build with the sharpest image and lowest noise — best for rooms where you can control the lighting. High-Contrast Gray uses the same three-layer construction as Premium but with a gray surface that absorbs ambient light — better for rooms with windows or overhead lights you can’t fully dim. We are currently in the process of obtaining other screen options from up to 3 different manufacturers to provide different levels for your hitting needs.
What edge finish should I choose?
Classic Grommets attach the screen to your frame using bungee cords — the most common setup for Carl’s Place enclosures. Classic with Flaps adds fabric panels that fold over the frame to hide the hardware for a cleaner finished look. Classic with Loop gives you a continuous Velcro edge for attaching custom accessories like side netting or valance pieces.
BAGS & EQUIPMENT
What’s the difference between a stand bag and a cart bag?
A stand bag has built-in legs that prop it upright on the course — designed for golfers who walk and carry. A cart bag is designed to strap onto a riding cart or push trolley, with pockets positioned for side access while the bag is strapped in. If you ride most of the time, a cart bag is the better choice. If you walk, a stand bag is more practical.
Do golf bags ship assembled and ready to use?
Yes — all bags ship ready to use. No assembly required.
